Merit Badges - the Process
Below is the proper way to open a Merit Badge and Complete it.
- The Scout must contact a Merit Badge Counselor by phone or in person and schedule a meeting to discuss the Merit Badge. Parental support is essential to motivate the Scout to make the call and complete the requirements, please don't make it for them. Remember, we're teaching self reliance.
- NO WORK SHOULD BE DONE PRIOR TO THIS MEETING.
- Obtain a "blue card" Merit Badge Application from the Scoutmaster or Counselor.
- It is filled out by the Scout, then signed/ dated by the Scoutmaster.
- The "Blue Card" Application is returned to the Counselor, who holds onto it until completion.
- Complete the requirements to the Counselor's satisfaction.
- When the requirements are completed, the Counselor fills out their information and the card is given to the Scoutmaster to be signed/dated as completed.
- The Advancement Chair is given the completed "Blue Card" application and he submits it on a record form to Baltimore Area Council where its recorded in the Scout's permanent record.
- The Scout receives the Merit Badge at a Court of Awards.
- Safeguard the portion of the "Blue Card" that is returned to you with your Merit Badge. A copy of all completed Merit Badge cards is attached with your Eagle Application.
